Piece 28 — Amethyst Spirit Quartz

I have to tell you how this stone came to me.

It was at a mineral and crystal trade fair in Munich. A French dealer had a table of extraordinary things. And among them was this — a spirit quartz amethyst cluster of a particular shade of lavender purple that I had never seen before and have not seen since. I didn't want his whole table. I didn't want a selection. I wanted this one piece, exactly this one, and nothing else.

What followed was a negotiation conducted entirely in my rusty, broken French. I am not sure he understood everything I said. I am quite sure he understood that I was not leaving without it.

Spirit quartz is amethyst in one of its most extraordinary forms — dozens of tiny crystal points covering the entire surface of a larger crystal, each one catching light independently, creating a piece that seems to glow from within. This one is a pale, luminous lavender — that particular purple that sits closer to light than to shadow. The hand-sculpted setting follows the natural contours of the stone, finished in matte silver that echoes the steel-toned matrix of the crystal's base.

It hangs on a repurposed iron chain with matte silver plating — substantial, industrial, and completely right for a stone of this presence.
