PIECE 56 Oversized Amethyst, Fine Silver & Steel Necklace

This one started as a vision.

I had been looking at this amethyst for a while. It had been sitting in my studio, part of a collection I had built up over time, and every time I walked past it I thought the same thing: that needs to become something. When I was preparing for a show and wanted to bring real newness to it, I finally sat down and made it.

I am not going to pretend this is a subtle piece. It is not. It weighs 434 grams. It is enormous. It is the kind of thing you make when you want to say something without opening your mouth.

The amethyst came from a trade fair dealer, as most amethysts do. The stone itself originates in Brazil, where the finest deposits in the world are found. I sculpted the setting and leafed it in fine silver, which gives it that cool, lunar quality that I love against deep purple. The chain is heavy stainless steel, which it needs to be. Nothing lighter could carry this piece with the authority it deserves.

I made it. And then I decided not to send it to the show after all. I wanted it near me for a while first. That is always a sign with my work. When I hesitate to let a piece go, when I find myself wanting to keep it, that is usually when I know it is truly exceptional. And those are always the pieces that find their person fastest.

Because I work in fashion, I think about this a lot: the most powerful combinations are always a statement piece against something stripped back. This necklace with a simple shirt. A clean dress. Anything that gets out of the way and lets the piece speak. Which it will. Loudly.

Amethyst works with the crown and third eye chakras, the energy of deep knowing and inner clarity. In fine silver, that energy is cool and direct. This is a piece for someone who has no interest in going unnoticed.
