Black and white. Night and light. A collar that sits at the throat with the quiet authority of something that has already decided everything.

The faceted obsidian beads have been in my studio for twenty years. I have always loved them for the reason most people miss entirely — obsidian looks black at first glance, but look into it and it reveals itself. A silvery ash running through the darkness, a depth that has nothing to do with the surface. This is volcanic glass — born from lava, cooled in an instant, preserving inside it the particular energy of the earth in its most elemental state.

These beads remind me of Central Oregon, near the dormant volcano of Mt. Bachelor. Ancient lava flows stretch across that landscape, and obsidian is simply there — lying in the fields, embedded in the earth, as ordinary and extraordinary as everything else in that wild, beautiful country. I spent time there with my family when I was young. That landscape lives in me. It lives in these beads.

The centrepiece is a Brazilian quartz drusy — a crystal nugget I found at a trade fair, its surface covered in thousands of tiny crystal points that catch light like fresh snow. What struck me immediately was its form — exactly the right oval, exactly the right height and length, as though it had been waiting to sit precisely here, in the centre of this collar, between these particular beads. Some combinations simply announce themselves.

Steel wire, vintage closure. Everything exactly as it should be.

Obsidian works with the root chakra — protection, truth, and the particular courage it takes to look clearly at what is. Quartz brings light and amplification through the crown chakra. Together they create a piece that is at once grounding and illuminating — a reminder that darkness and light are not opposites. They are companions.
