Epidote Amulet #33

The man who sold me this stone was a Persian-German medical doctor whose real passion was the Austrian mountains. Not treating patients — though he did that too — but climbing, searching, finding. He sold me this epidote specimen that he had pulled from the earth himself, somewhere in Austria, in the particular way that only someone who truly knows what they are looking for can find something like this.

I think about that when I look at this piece. A doctor. A stone hunter. A man who understood both the human body and the body of the earth.

Epidote is one of the great undersung stones. Its green is so dark it reads almost black at first — and then the light shifts, and you see it. Deep forest green, the colour of the Alps in shadow, with a cluster structure that resembles tourmaline — those extraordinary blade-like crystal formations packed together like a field of black needles, catching light from angles you didn't expect. It is not a stone that announces itself immediately. It reveals itself slowly, to the people paying attention.

It sits in a hand-sculpted setting finished with 24 carat gold leaf — that warm, living gold forming a border around the darkness of the stone like last light on a mountain ridge.
